Cracked Vinyl Siding Repair

Cracked Vinyl Siding Repair

Annoying cracks develop in vinyl siding for any number of seemingly unknown reasons. Repairing it is a simple do-it-yourself project that shouldn't take very long at all.
The tools you'll need are PVC cleaner, PVC cement, aluminum or galvanized nails and a zip tool.

  • Remove the damaged vinyl siding section. The zip tool is made especially for the purpose and saves a lot of time. Insert the tool beneath the bottom edge of the top overlapping section of siding. Bring the section off by sliding the tool sideways underneath it while pulling down on it.
  • Clean up the crack's edges. Carefully clip off rough edges on the damage to make the crack less noticeable.
  • Pull the old nails. Clear the way for the siding repair with locking pliers or a claw hammer.
  • Use PVC cleaner on the damaged panel. Clean the back of the panel of all debris, spider webs and other small items that get lodged into siding over a period of time. The area to be repaired needs to be thoroughly cleaned to hold the glue.
  • Prepare the patch. You'll need a section of siding that is slightly larger than the crack in the old panel. Glue the patch section of vinyl siding to the back of the damaged piece so that the new siding shows through the crack. This blend between the old and new siding is nearly undetectable if you don't know where to look for it.
  • Let the glue dry. The patch will show through the crack and make it virtually unnoticeable.
  • Replace the repaired panel. Nail it into place and lock it back in place using the zip tool. The job's finished.

This is a simple and inexpensive way to make your house siding repair a breeze. Save money by doing it yourself.

Having run a handyman business for more than 7 years, I'm not sure about this repair as I've not seen any of my 50+ technicians use this approach. As finding new siding to replace the pieces that are cracked can be difficult, I will explore this further ... although you still need a new (smaller) piece for your repair. Curious where you typically take the slice of vinyl and how wide it must be to maintain it's structural integrity
